Architects Design Music

performance piece

collaboration with Michael J. Schumacher + The Kitchen gallery

“ Our investigations into sound and form are part of the firm’s ongoing investigation into natural phenomena, space, and materiality.”

HanrahanMeyers architects (hMa) uses materials from nature to create buildings and projects that generate conversations about natural phenomena.  hMa was invited to design a three-dimensional ‘sound structure’, using Michael J. Schumacher’s computer based matrix. hMa responded by designing the ‘light score’, a score of light waves for a sound improvisation with a trio of musicians: Kaffe Matthews, electronics; Matthew Ostrowski, electronics; & Okkyung Lee, cello.  The light score is currently on display at Diapason Gallery in Manhattan, where it is also available for purchase as a DVD
